TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel has formally added a laser-based interceptor to its air defense arsenal, becoming the first country to operationally deploy a system that uses directed-energy technology to destroy aerial threats.

The new system, known as “Or Eitan,” was officially delivered to the Israel Defense Forces during a ceremony at a Rafael facility, defense officials said. It was developed by Israel’s Ministry of Defense in partnership with Rafael after years of research and testing.

According to officials, the laser has successfully intercepted rockets, mortar fire and unmanned aerial vehicles during extensive trials. The system is expected to operate alongside Israel’s existing layered air defenses, including Iron Dome, David’s Sling and the Arrow system.

During the handover, Dov Oster — one of the system’s developers and the father of Capt. Eitan Oster, who was killed in combat and for whom the system is named — recited the traditional Shehechiyanu blessing.
Defense Minister Israel Katz said the deployment represents a fundamental shift in Israel’s defensive capabilities and serves as a deterrent message to adversaries.
Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram described the delivery as the point at which the program moves from development into operational deployment, while Air Force Commander Tomer Bar said the system strengthens Israel’s ability to respond to evolving threats.
Rafael Chairman Yuval Steinitz said the laser interceptor places Israel at the forefront of global air defense technology.

For whatever it’s worth, IMHO he should have made a ‘Hatov V’Hameitiv’ instead of only Shehechiyanu – as the system is made to help other people.
I think that announcements such as this should not be made. Why let your enemy know what you possess? Let them learn about it the hard way.
This is amazing, hope it works even better than the iron dome etc.
We need better offense not just defense. They should tremble to send a missile into Israel.
