2 Charedi Women Arrested For Smuggling 96 Kg Of Khat Into Czech Republic

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Two young charedi women in their twenties, residents of central Israel, were arrested this week at Prague’s international airport in the Czech Republic after a large quantity of khat was found in their suitcases—about 48 kilograms each, for a total of 96 kilograms.

According to a statement by local customs authorities and police, the goods were discovered during a routine inspection of the luggage. The value of the seized quantity is estimated at tens of thousands of euros. Immediately after the discovery, the two women were taken into custody at a detention facility in Prague.

Details of the investigation indicate that the two did not act alone but were allegedly used as couriers for an organized smuggling network. Investigators believe that a well-known Israeli dealer, who is under police surveillance, recruited them to transport the shipment to the Czech market.

Law enforcement officials estimate that the primary target market for khat in Prague is among immigrant communities from African countries, where the plant is considered highly sought-after for regular consumption.

The families of the suspects have contacted Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting urgent assistance. The department for Israelis abroad stated that the Israeli consulate in Prague is handling the matter and is in contact with local authorities to monitor their condition and provide assistance as permitted under local law.

The current incident joins a series of similar cases: about four months ago, two charedi youths aged 19 were arrested in Germany after attempting to smuggle approximately 50 kilograms of khat in a rented car. The two were released from detention this week.
