NEW YORK (AP) — About 20,000 nurses at 15 hospitals across New York City and Long Island have issued 10-day strike notices, raising the possibility of the largest nurses’ strike in the city’s history as early as Jan. 12, union officials said Friday.

The New York State Nurses Association said its members delivered strike notices to 12 private-sector hospitals in New York City and three Long Island hospitals operated by Northwell Health. The notices were issued two days after the nurses’ contracts expired on Dec. 31.

Union leaders said bargaining will continue through the 10-day notice period in hopes of reaching agreements and avoiding a walkout. The union has not publicly detailed all outstanding issues, but past negotiations have centered on staffing levels, pay, benefits and workplace safety.

If a strike occurs, it would mark an unprecedented work stoppage in the city’s health care system, affecting major hospitals and potentially disrupting patient care across the region. Hospitals typically prepare contingency plans during strike notices, including hiring temporary staff.

Hospital representatives did not immediately comment on the notices or the status of negotiations.

Yes, nurses work hard, however, they are paid very well. Starting salary for a hospital RN is well over $100,000 and they get additional pay differentials for working weekends and overnight shifts. A nurse can easily make over $150,000. Not bad for a career that requires, at most, a bachelor degree.
The union is a demanding 10% raises for the next 3 years. That’s a 33% increase! That is insane, especially considering they just got 19% raises over the last 3 years.
The issue only starts with NYSNA. What ever the hospitals give to them they will have to give to the other unions in the hospital.
