NEW YORK (VINnews) — Subway and bus riders in New York City will pay higher fares starting Sunday, as a long-planned increase by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority takes effect alongside the agency’s full transition away from MetroCards.

The base fare for subways and local buses rises by 10 cents to $3. The change completes the move to the OMNY tap-and-go payment system and ends 30-day unlimited MetroCards. Riders can instead purchase a $35 seven-day unlimited pass, up from $34, with all additional rides free after 12 trips in a week.
Express bus fares increase from $7 to $7.25, while seven-day unlimited express passes rise from $64 to $67. Cash and coin payments on buses are no longer accepted, with OMNY now required systemwide.
Several regional transit systems that previously accepted MetroCards — including NICE buses on Long Island and Bee-Line buses in Westchester — will also raise base fares to $3 to match the MTA.
Commuter rail riders will see additional increases, with Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North monthly and weekly tickets rising by 4.5%, along with new enforcement measures aimed at reducing fare evasion.
The fare hikes come as Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said his administration plans to move toward free bus service citywide, a proposal he has framed as a way to ease the financial burden on working New Yorkers and speed up surface transit. No timeline has been announced for implementing the free-bus plan.

first STOP the congestion pricing then you can make buses free

I thought congestion pricing would solve the mta bloated wasteful budget needs. Why raise prices too? Maybe it’s time to see if all their spending is needed. This is incorrect. There is no need to purchase a special weekly pass. Rather, each week, once you have paid $35 with the same payment method – ANY payment method, no special passes are required or exist – all remaining rides are free.
And tolls across Washington Bridge higher too
Yes, tolls for the George Washington Bridge (GWB) and other Port Authority crossings increased in early 2025 and are scheduled for further hikes in 2026, driven by inflation (CPI) and a separate plan to fund capital projects, with drivers paying more for Tolls-by-Mail or unreadable E-ZPasses. Expect upcoming adjustments for 2026, including a 3% inflation-based increase and a 25-cent hike, impacting the pay-by-plate rates significantly.
The MTA is a corrupt, inept “quasi-govt” entity. Bigwigs get $500,000 per annum + huge expense acct. The Board mtgs and public hearings sre a joke. At least Momzeri is making noise against the fatcat MTA.
Yea the verrezano and Carey tunnel went up in case you don’t think the 10cent subway fare is a big deal. And all the Jersey crossings from the port authority. A trip to Lakewood or long branch is a fortune
I want buses to be free for one simple reason: they’re not going to upgrade to the kind of system where you tap the card on the bus. If they’re continuing to charge fares, they’re having passengers pay at the door. And this means there’s a line to get on the bus. And it’s cold!
Just because he promised free bosses in order to get elected by the naive idiots , doesn’t mean he has to keep his promises, after all he is part of the religion that it’s ok to lie & deceive….

The government steals it from one person and gives it to another while taking their cut. Cities are corps by definition and so is the federal gov. Looks it up.
Why is a $.10 increase on a subway/bus a big deal?? How about the $2 and $3 increases on tolls?? I’m sick and tired of subsidizing public transport and they are kvetching about a dime increase? When was the last time public transport fares were raised? How about enforcing collections instead of overlooking turnstile jumpers? How about vehicles having the “option” of paying/not paying the toll?
Yup the subway/bus ride are free it just cost a$3.00 boarding fee 🙂
