WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-The Pentagon has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, including the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, to depart the South China Sea and steam toward the Middle East, according to defense officials and multiple news reports.

The redeployment comes as tensions escalate with Iran over its violent crackdown on nationwide protests, airspace closures, and broader concerns about Tehran’s nuclear program and regional activities.
At typical cruising speeds, the transit across the Indian Ocean to the Arabian Sea is expected to take approximately one week, positioning the group for arrival in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility by late January.

No U.S. carrier strike group is currently operating in the Middle East, a rare gap in naval presence highlighted by recent fleet trackers. The Lincoln, which had been conducting routine operations including F-35C flight ops and live-fire drills in the South China Sea, represents the closest available asset.
Analysts interpret the move as preparation for potentially sustained operations rather than a limited strike. Assets already in theater — such as Tomahawk-equipped destroyers in the Persian Gulf and long-range B-2 bombers from the U.S. mainland — could enable initial action, similar to the June 2025 strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
“You don’t reposition a full carrier strike group from the Indo-Pacific for a one-night symbolic operation,” one defense source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “This signals readiness for prolonged presence and follow-on capability if required.”
The shift follows heightened regional volatility, including Iran’s internal unrest and U.S. warnings about possible intervention if the regime’s response to protests intensifies.
Pentagon officials have not issued a formal confirmation, describing the Lincoln’s prior activities as routine under the U.S. 7th Fleet. Any official statement is expected as the group progresses westward.

There are U.S. submarines, with Tomahawk Cruise missiles, which can strike Iran (from underwater), long before the Abraham Lincoln task force arrives on the scene.
