The outage, which began earlier in the day, disrupted voice calls, text messaging and mobile data for users in major cities including New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston and Atlanta. Many customers reported their phones showing “SOS” or “emergency only” mode, indicating they could not connect to Verizon’s network.

As of 8 p.m., Verizon posted an update on X through its support account acknowledging that the problem was ongoing.

“Verizon engineering teams are continuing to address today’s service interruptions,” the company wrote. “Our teams remain fully deployed and are focused on the issue. We understand the impact this has on your day and remain committed to resolving this as quickly as possible.”

The company again declined to disclose the cause of the outage or offer a timeline for full restoration.

Earlier statements from Verizon similarly confirmed engineers were working to resolve the disruption but provided few details. The company has not issued a formal press release on its website.

The outage affected hundreds of thousands of customers nationwide, raising concerns about public safety and emergency communications, though officials said 911 access generally remained available.

Late Wednesday, Verizon said service interruptions could continue for some users as crews worked to stabilize the network.
