MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — What began as a dispute over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has escalated into a broader debate about free speech in Miami Beach, after a local political activist said police visited her home to question a critical Facebook comment she made about Mayor Steven Meiner.

Raquel Pacheco, a longtime activist, military veteran and former candidate for city commission and state Senate, said she was stunned when detectives knocked on her door Monday and told her they wanted to discuss her online remarks about the mayor, according to a report by Local 10 News.
The comment stemmed from a post in which Meiner described Miami Beach as a “safe haven for everyone,” contrasting it with New York City’s approach to Israeli and Jewish businesses. Pacheco responded with a sharply worded critique of the mayor’s stance on Palestinians, LGBTQ issues and the arts, adding several clown emojis.
She recorded the brief exchange with police, repeatedly asking whether she was being charged with a crime and why officers were investigating a social media post.
“This is freedom of speech. This is America, right?” she said in the video, as reported by Local 10.
Pacheco said she believes the visit was politically motivated rather than a matter of public safety, calling it “an intimidation tactic” aimed at silencing critics.
A Miami Beach police spokesperson said the encounter was precautionary, citing recent national concerns about antisemitism and saying detectives conducted a brief, consensual visit to ensure there was no immediate threat to the mayor or the community.
Legal experts say the episode underscores the tension between public safety and free expression, noting that courts have consistently ruled that only speech intended and likely to incite imminent lawless action can fall outside First Amendment protections.
The incident has added fuel to an already heated local debate, with supporters of Pacheco warning that police involvement in political disputes risks chilling public discourse, even when framed as a safety measure.

“local political activist” usually describes a meshugana aka nut job.
The fake press doesnt make a peep when Lelita James quashes the first amendment rights of Betar but is first in line to defend the right to riot of every anti-Semite on the planet.
What really concerns me about this pro-Palestinian activist, as well as the thousands of other pro-Palestinian demonstrators in the USA, and in other countries, is that that there has not been any protests or demonstrations by those groups, about the carnage taking place in Iran, whereby thousands of civilians are being slaughtered. Where is the same outrage that they showed towards Israel, and Jewish institutions, during the war in Gaza? In summary, they are hypocritical phonies.
Fla is next after NY and NJ. DeSantis is leaving, anti Semitism is bubbling underneath. Open your eyes, Fla shlepping yidden, it’s only a few years away from current paradise.
“Pacheco responded with a sharply worded critique ” what did she say? what were the “sharp words”?
We should want (and if need be, demand) protection but not SPECIAL protection. Special protection often has unintended consequences and usually backfires miserably.
She would be perfect in New York working for Mamdani
Cops shouldve snuffed her
Reminds me of the Biden days dring Covid. There was no real free speech. I applaud her right for free speech and to post a comment even if disagree with it.
