KIRYAS JOEL, N.Y. — A viral YouTube video posted Friday by influencer Tyler Oliveira continues to be a hot topic on social media, fueling intense debate and an avalanche of responses on X over its portrayal of the Hasidic village of Kiryas Joel.

The video, which quickly surpassed Two million views, depicts the community as dominated by people who do not work and rely on public assistance. Critics say the portrayal is inaccurate and sensationalized, accusing the creator of relying on stereotypes and selective encounters to drive engagement.

The backlash has drawn responses from across the Jewish spectrum, including pro-Zionist Jews who openly disagree with Kiryas Joel’s anti-Zionist ideology, but say that ideological differences do not justify what they described as misleading or demeaning portrayals of its residents. Several commentators pointed to what they called contradictions in the video’s framing, arguing it reflected a flawed and simplistic narrative rather than a serious examination of community life.

Community members and advocates said the video ignored the reality that thousands of residents work in offices, schools, healthcare, retail, Real Estate Developers, and small businesses, noting the influencer made no effort to visit business districts or office complexes within the village.

As the debate continues, local leaders have urged residents not to engage with media figures or independent content creators seeking interviews, warning that such interactions are often edited out of context and used to inflame controversy rather than inform.

The episode has also prompted warnings to other Orthodox communities across the tri-state area, as critics say similar tactics are increasingly used by influencers seeking viral attention rather than factual reporting.

Below, we are posting a sample of the many reactions appearing on X — including comments from notable figures as well as everyday Jewish users — reflecting the breadth and intensity of the online response.

Sadly, the comments on YouTube are only from anti semites. There aren’t any from decent citizens.

There is something off about the way he approached these people no introduction or politely asking for a minute of their time just asking intrusive personal questions.

I have a solution, the government should cut all but all programs to everyone that includes free schools, lunches, food stamps, medicaid ,ambulance service fire dept…. let’s see how Kiryas Yoel would survive and how the rest of USA would survive

Anti semitic posts always get the most responses, because of hasbarah people who always get triggered and respond. Half of the 250k views were probably by Jews.

Why shouldn’t there be an agrument of having ANY children? If you can’t afford it-don’t have children! TALKING TO TYLER. Who decided that 1 ort 2 children are OK to have? Feeding a dog?

Also-in order to keep the population AMERICAN-one needs to have 2.5 kids average. They don’t. THE KJ JEW as well as american jews (along with arabs) will be a majority

Maybe kj is getting this treatment because it leader gedalya szedeigin refuses to demand his state senator skoufis and his assembly man chris eachus oppose assisted suicide A9515/S8835. Both skoufis and eachus supported assisted suicide last year. 2 votes can stop it in the Senate and 4 in the assembly

The shul is packed. “it’s 3:00 in the afternoon. Why aren’t people at work”?? Sounds like a legitimate question to me. To anyone from the outside world, and even to many in our non chasidish community, it’s a head scratcher. Especially when housing is very expensive, and everyone that is shopping, pays with food stamps and then is seen getting into new expensive minivans to loaded $75,000. + Suburbans in a mink coat/streimel. (Wait till he finds out what a streimel costs) And there’s an average of 8 to 12 children per family. The baby strollers are the latest and greatest and the fancy expensive European style clothing that the women, girls, and children shop for while there’s a store selling wall to wall expensive silver in such a community doesn’t sit well for the rest of the population. While we/they got used to it as a normal way of life, most of the rest of society is going to be like, things that make you go hmmm.

is it not true that Kiryas Joel has one of the highest poverty rates and percentage of people on welfare or other government entitlements of any city in the entire country?…
