WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)— Lawmakers are once again advancing legislation to eliminate the twice-yearly clock changes by making daylight saving time the permanent standard across the United States.

The Sunshine Protection Act of 2025 — reintroduced in the 119th Congress as H.R. 139 in the House by Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., and S. 29 in the Senate by Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla. — would lock clocks on daylight saving time year-round, ending the annual “spring forward” in March and “fall back” in November.
Supporters argue the change would enhance evening daylight in winter, reduce sleep disruptions from time shifts, improve public safety, boost economic activity through extended outdoor hours and benefit mental health with more afternoon sunlight. Opponents, including health experts and some lawmakers, warn that darker winter mornings could disrupt circadian rhythms, posing challenges for schoolchildren, early commuters and northern states where sunrise delays would be most pronounced.
The bills, introduced in early January 2025, remain in committee — referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee — with no further action reported as of mid-January 2026. Bipartisan cosponsors have supported similar measures in past sessions, including a unanimous Senate passage in 2022 that later stalled in the House.
More than a dozen states, including recent additions like Maine and Texas, have enacted laws to adopt permanent daylight saving time contingent on federal approval. Arizona and Hawaii already observe year-round standard time under existing exemptions.
The proposal revives a long-running debate rooted in the Uniform Time Act of 1966, with periodic efforts since the 1970s energy crisis experiments. As of January 19, 2026, no major progress has occurred, meaning most Americans will still “spring forward” one hour on March 8, 2026.

Have a good time waiting for the Zman for tallis and tefilin if you work.
What an affront & horrifying thing to impose Daylight’s Savings Time in winter.
However of they would introduce Eastern Standard time into summer:- What a wonderful move this would be.
In places like Detroit, the earliest time to put on Tefillian would be about 8:30. How would that work. (vosikin would be easy.. about 9:00 A.M.)
And remember when they tried this for one year in the early 1970″s – school busses were picking up kids in the pitch dark and there were many accidents.
YES! Spring forward and never go back…we don’t need early morning light…we want it light when we get off work!
Lehavdil the Arabs are against permanent DST for the Sam reason it would be difficult for us – Davening times. They can lobby together.
Personally I am for permanent standard time.
why not compromise and spring forward 30 min an deep that permanent?
I would prefer standard time year round, although it would mean more people missing sof zman krias Shema.
But daylight savings tine in the winter would make it easier to observe Shabbos on Friday afternoon.
It’s just stupid. Schedules are based around standard time. 9-5 is 9-5 because those hours make sense in standard time. Permanent DST is just throwing things off by an hour for no reason. Abolish DST or stick with it, but making it permanent makes no sense.
i’m surprised the proponents don’t claim that it will also cure baldness! the purpose of daylight savings time is to adjust the arbitrariness of the 9-5 day to the reality of the seasonal shift in daylight hours. daylight savings time in winter makes no more sense than standard time in summer. if they don’t want to learn how to set a clock twice a year (remember the vcrs that flashed 00:00 forever) change the workday to be from sunrise to sunset, as the farmers have always done. work has already spilled over from “office hours” to whenever the boss chooses to send an email.
Completely asinine. Sunrise today would be 8:15. That means that it’s dark until about 8am. Many schools, including public schools, start their day at 8am or earlier. The upside of DST is minimal.
I thought that they did the daylight savings thing for the farmers. With the advancing technology and lights on the equipments I don’t believe that the Farmers need the time change daylight savings time crap any longer. Do away with the fall back and spring ahead crap and make it one standard time.
The working crowd supersonic speeds through their prayers anyway it might be better for them to do it slower at home rather than the current travesty
where is Aguda to stop it?
Please, make this happen!! Daylight Saving Time is so much better!
