“I’m signing a historic executive order to combat the scourge of addiction and substance abuse — big deal in this country and probably every country — we’re calling it the Great American Recovery Initiative,” Trump said during the signing ceremony in the Oval Office.

The initiative aims to align federal programs, set clear objectives and provide data-driven progress updates on addressing addiction, described in a White House fact sheet as a disease affecting communities nationwide. It directs coordination across government agencies, healthcare providers, faith communities and the private sector to save lives, restore families and strengthen communities.

The order instructs the initiative to recommend steps for better aligning federal efforts, raise awareness about addiction, promote access to treatment and foster a culture that celebrates recovery. It will advise agencies on integrating prevention, early intervention, treatment, recovery support and re-entry programs, as well as directing grants toward addiction recovery with emphasis on prevention, treatment and long-term resilience.

The initiative will consult with states, tribal nations, local jurisdictions, community organizations, faith-based groups, the private sector and philanthropies to identify effective strategies for expanding treatment access and supporting recovery.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Kathryn Burgum, wife of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, are reportedly involved in chairing or supporting the effort, according to reports from CBS News and other outlets.

Trump emphasized personal impacts during the event, noting that many attendees, including himself, have experienced the heartache of losing loved ones to drug or alcohol addiction.

The move comes amid ongoing national concerns over the opioid epidemic and broader substance use disorders, with the administration highlighting the need for a comprehensive, coordinated federal approach.

The White House described the initiative as fulfilling promises to tackle the addiction crisis and ensure Americans can access necessary help. Details on specific funding allocations or timelines for implementation were not immediately detailed in the executive order or fact sheet.

BH yeshivos and shomrei torah do demonstrably better than the national average. This new executive order should justify funding for yeshiva tuition regardless of whether yeshivos are institutions of religion
