NYT: New York Tabloids Weigh Nicknames for Mayor Mamdani, With No Clear Favorite Yet

NEW YORK (VINnews) — With a new mayor in City Hall, New York’s tabloid press is grappling with a familiar civic ritual: what nickname will stick.

According to a report by The New York Times, editors and headline writers are testing out shorthand versions of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s name as they search for a punchy moniker to fit front pages and capture the city’s mood.

The city’s tabloids have alternated between variations such as “Zo,” “Zoh” and “Mam,” reflecting uncertainty over which abbreviation might endure. The tradition of branding mayors with catchy nicknames dates back decades and has often shaped public perception as much as policy debates.

Past mayors have not been spared. Fiorello La Guardia was known as “The Little Flower,” Rudolph W. Giuliani became simply “Rudy,” Michael Bloomberg was dubbed “Bloomy,” and Bill de Blasio was frequently shortened to “Blaz” or other variations in bold tabloid headlines.

The report noted that Mayor Mamdani’s name has been central to his political rise, featured prominently in campaign branding and often corrected by the mayor himself when mispronounced by rivals. Among close aides, he is sometimes referred to simply as “Z,” a practical shorthand in text messages and internal communications.

The search for a lasting nickname comes as Mamdani navigates the early months of his administration, facing challenges ranging from winter storms to housing policy. While the tabloids experiment publicly, City Hall has offered a more restrained preference.

A spokesperson for the mayor told The New York Times that he prefers to be addressed formally as “Mayor Mamdani.”

Whether the press settles on a playful diminutive, a biting critique, or something in between remains to be seen — but in New York politics, history suggests the headlines will decide.
