NEW YORK (VINnews) — Zohran Mamdani met Monday at City Hall with a small group of Haredi Jewish leaders to discuss public safety, community priorities and ways the city can support their neighborhoods.

The meeting lasted about 45 minutes, according to Phylisa Wisdom, who leads the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism. Topics included affordable housing, child care and efforts to combat antisemitism across New York City.
“The mayor emphasized that he will continue to build strong, meaningful relationships with the broad, diverse Orthodox community of our city,” Wisdom said in a statement.

Moshe Indig, who helped organize the meeting after Mamdani’s election victory, thanked the mayor in a social media post for hosting what he described as the administration’s first Jewish leadership roundtable at City Hall. He said the discussion included heads of yeshivas and leaders of community organizations and focused on public safety and other priorities.
According to journalist Jacob Kornbluh, attendees included Moshe Indig of the Satmar Ahronim community; David Niederman of Satmar Zalonym; Joel Rosenfeld of Bobov; Ben Barber of Bobov-45; Yeruchim Silber of Agudath Israel of America; Chanina Sperlin and Yaacov Behrman of Crown Heights; Josh Mehlman of the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition; and Baruch Rothman of Yeshiva Darchei Torah, Also a rep from Khal Adas Yereim Vien of Borough Park,
However, some leaders in the broader Modern Orthodox community expressed frustration that they were not invited or chose not to attend. Critics have cited Mamdani’s past positions on Israel and controversy surrounding comments related to the war following the October 7 attacks, as well as recently resurfaced social media activity attributed to his wife, as reasons for their reluctance to participate.
The meeting comes as city officials and Jewish organizations continue to grapple with concerns about antisemitism and security across New York’s Jewish communities.

The Satmar Chasidim do not represent all the frum people of NYC. We are visible Jews . You see our modest attire, our kipas and Tzitzit in the streets. We also support Israel, the one and only Jewish tiny state among 66 vast Islamist state. We do not support BDS of Israel and we don’t march with the Muslims to globalize the Antifada. We certainly don’t sell out our Jewish brothers and sisters for government freebies and staying out of our Yeshivas. When we see Satmars and Naturei Karta marching with those who call for the slaughter of Jews, our hearts cry out to Hashem. We want Achdus and peace . We want to speak to our Muslim mayor with one voice. We want protection for our children and our grandchildren as they walk to school, protection for us as we ride the train to our offices in the city, protection for our shuls, community centers, Yeshivas, business, homes. . . from the haters and antisemites who plague this city today. Antisemitism has surged 830% to date and continues to rise in this city. Hadhem Yerachem! Don’t spill your brother’s blood for government freebies. Don’t compromise the safety of the Yidden in this city. We are all in this together.
