The donor, Leo Friedman, a healthcare entrepreneur and philanthropist, dedicated the building in his father’s name, honoring Moshe Friedman’s decades of service as a trusted gabbai to the late Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum.
The project is part of the broader Satmar community in Boro Park, which operates under the leadership of Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum.
The property, located on Bay Parkway between 59th and 60th streets and formerly a Rite Aid pharmacy, was purchased last year for about $13 million and closed in March. A naming ceremony was held Tuesday. A groundbreaking for construction is planned for after Shabbos.
Officials said the planned Talmud Torah complex is expected to span roughly 120,000 square feet, with classrooms, study halls and other facilities serving thousands of students. The broader project is estimated at about $40 million, part of a wider expansion of Satmar institutions in the area.
The building marks the third major donation from Leo Friedman for Satmar Boro Park in the past three years, following contributions to the Cheder on Ocean Parkway and the girls’ school on 62nd Street.

Whoever thinks that Satmare do not support tzedakahs other then their own, are totally ignorant of the facts. Ask the large tzedakahs like RCCS, Bonei Oilam, Reb Meir Baal Haness, Hatzoloh, etc. who their biggest donors are. How do you compare the Kimcha d”Pischa of Satmar to all the other ones? They only give their own? Drive through and find out.
The Satmarer Rebbe, Reb Yoel z”l, was mechanech his talmidim and chassidim from their early years to do tzedakah.
C’mon – call a spade a spade. They are giants in tzedakah.
I don’t agree with many of their “shitas”, but here they shine.
Satmar has the best fundraising abilities of any group. The rebbe asks the rebbe gets
Very nice. I hope Moshe gabbai son, now uses his money to address the other issues in satmar which are chinuch related. They need to start mosdos for the “gimmel” boys and for the less than that. So first Satmar needs a waterbury or MOE for its struggling boys & girls. But it also needs to think about the non OTD boys but just less serious. Is there a system for those. Something that gives them a chyuis? Not everyone is interested in the reba and chasidus . Then there are the adults who are “checked out”. Shmuz half of davening, never open a gemara and are fully frum in custom. No they aren’t “tuna Biagels”. but they don’t have an Eli Stefansky or a Lutzk, mordys shtibel, KMH etc to give them a chyuis. Its growing and growing and they need a good mashpia plus mosod to address those boys and grown adults (This is on top of the obvious need for a footsteps alternative)
Why are they building this in Boro Park? They could build 10 times that upstate for half the price. It would be worth it just to have parking too!
What I wrote is not Lashon Harah. It’s the truth and tens of thousands of frum Yidden know it and say it. The Satmar Rebbes encouraging their followers to vote for a Jew hating mayor, an Islamofascist, a Communist , who called for a Global Antifada and supports the terrorists, Hamas barbarians, who kidnapped, brutalized and killed Yidden, for their own gain, must be called out. Nothing about this is a lie. There were Satmar in Boro Park, my neighbors, friends, who did not listen, and voted for Cuomo. However, thousands, especially in Williamsburg, voted as the Rebbe requested. All of us know why they made a deal with Mamdani. This pushed Mamdani over the edge. Every Yid, child, adult, man, women, who gets hurt by a Jew hater because Mamdani, the Jew hater, gives a wink to Jew hatred— those Jews who invited him to their Succoth, ate with him and rallied for him are to blame. We, frum Yidden, in all parts of this city believe this is a fact.
When it comes to Tzedaka and helping others, there is nobody like Satmar.
I know I will catch flak for this comment, but I couldn’t help wondering, how much money Satmar could get if they named it for Mamzarani.
moradik, unlike the Zionists with their fear mongering, we prioritize chinuch our childrens future and is not sending our 18 year olds into Gaza or Lebanon with a rule not to shoot.
