Mamdani Faces Wave of Criticism Over Framing of Alleged Attack Plot on Pro-Hamas Activist

NEW YORK (VINnews) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced an avalanche of criticism over the weekend following a Friday post about an alleged plot targeting Pro-Hamas activist Nerdeen Kiswani, with critics focusing on his language describing the suspect and raising questions about how he framed the incident.

In his post on X, Mamdani said authorities disrupted an alleged plan involving explosive devices and described it as an act of political violence. He also referenced a suspect he said was linked to an offshoot of the Jewish Defense League, which he described as a “known violent extremist organization.”

Critics took issue with Mamdani’s decision to highlight what he called a “Jewish extremist” affiliation, arguing that he has previously used different terminology in describing other incidents involving alleged perpetrators of violence, including cases where critics say he did not emphasize religious or ideological labels.

Others also questioned Mamdani’s statement that the suspect planned to flee to Israel, noting that such a detail was not included in publicly released federal charging documents at the time of the post.

Additional critics said the mention of Israel was unnecessary or misleading, with some pointing out that Israeli airspace has been restricted during regional tensions, questioning why the mayor included that detail in his public statement.

Additionally, some critics on social media have circulated past videos and statements attributed to Nerdeen Kiswani, claiming they show her making inflammatory remarks about Israel.

Among those criticizing Mamdani was commentator Laura Loomer, who accused him of bias in his characterization of the incident.

Political commentator Drew Pavlou also said Mamdani had applied inconsistent language in describing extremist incidents in New York.

User CyberBoy argued the mayor’s post failed to use comparable terminology for other attacks, while other users made similar claims across social media.

Account ZDK (online commentator) criticized the post as unfounded and accused Mamdani of selectively framing extremism.

Joel M. Petlin also weighed in, saying he does not condone any alleged violent threat against Nerdeen Kiswani, but arguing that her public rhetoric has at times included language he described as endorsing “resistance, by any means necessary” against Israeli civilians and Jews worldwide. His remarks added to broader accusations from critics that Mamdani’s post failed to provide sufficient context about the activist’s public positions.

Mamdani has not publicly responded to the criticism. His office did not immediately return a request for comment.
