The NY Post reports that more than 1,000 people gathered at Lehman College, where Sanders urged higher taxes on top earners and called on Hochul to support such measures.
Mamdani, who has pushed for higher taxes on wealthy New Yorkers, declined to appear and instead relied on allies and activists to promote the agenda.
Elon Musk, the wealthiest man alive, recently paid an effective tax rate of less than 3.3%.
That is less than the average truck driver, nurse and teacher.

Sanders used the rally to pressure Hochul, saying voters want a more progressive tax system and urging her to back policies targeting the wealthy.
The mayor’s absence comes as he navigates a delicate political balance with Hochul, who has publicly opposed new tax hikes despite support from some state lawmakers.
Supporters at the rally continued to advocate for the proposal, calling on Hochul to act, while some organizers said Mamdani’s absence did not affect their efforts.
The debate over taxing the wealthy remains a key issue ahead of budget negotiations and upcoming elections.
