JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Rabbi Yosef Shubli, a 54-year-old resident of Meron who serves as the rabbi of a Breslov community in the north of Israel, was arrested Wednesday night after a covert police investigation on charges of serious sexual offences. He was transferred to a police station for questioning, and will be arraigned in court as police request to extend his remand.

The clandestine investigation took place over the last month during which Northern District officers gathered evidence and findings. Once the covert phase concluded, investigators raided the location where Shovali was staying. Following his arrest, the investigation became public, and he was interrogated regarding the allegations against him.
According to sources familiar with the case, the investigation was prompted by a collection of testimonies and complaints. Investigators are examining claims that Shovali allegedly operated a mechanism of control and influence over his followers, using treatments presented as “spiritual” or “holistic.” A source involved in the investigation stated: “He managed to penetrate people’s souls and make them completely dependent on him. He controlled their daily schedules, distanced them from their families, and some effectively became his servants.”
Shovali’s name had already surfaced in headlines about a week ago after the Israeli Center for Cult Victims issued an unusual public warning regarding his activities. The Center claimed it had collected 16 testimonies over the years regarding a group operating in the Safed-Meron area under his leadership. According to the Center, these testimonies included allegations of: Patterns of dependency and control, severing family ties, exploitation and an atmosphere of fear, all performed under the guise of spiritual authority.
The Center stated that testimonies were gathered from 2011 through the past year, some from individuals who were part of the group’s “inner circle” for extended periods. Additionally, appeals were received from charedi parents and other people, describing severe damage to the family unit and long-term disconnection from relatives.
The report claims the group operated in two circles: a broad outer circle and a small, intimate inner circle. In the inner circle, intensive control was reportedly exerted over members’ lives, to the point where personal and family decisions were subject to the leader’s will. Some members reportedly changed their last names to “Shubli,” identified as his sons during Torah readings, and avoided starting families without his explicit approval.
It is further alleged that group members performed various tasks for Shubli without financial compensation, including cleaning, maintenance, driving, and childcare, which were framed as a “privilege” or a “spiritual mission.” Testimonies described an atmosphere of fear and humiliation, with the leader using “closeness and distancing” as a primary method of psychological control.
The Center for Cult Victims highlighted that among the testimonies were four descriptions of sexual acts which were committed under the guise of spiritual authority. According to the complainants, these acts were presented to them as part of a “spiritual process,” a “rectification” (Tikkun), or a “special closeness.”
Prior to publishing the warning, the Center reached out to Shubli with the primary allegations. In a response provided through his attorney, he stated that he “categorically denies all the claims and rejects them outright.”

Lots of name calling, but what are the factual allegations?
Is helping a baal tshuva considered a “control and influence” as well as “severing the (secular) family ties”?
Why was there a “covert police investigation on charges of serious sexual offences” to begin with? Did anyone even claim to be sexually abused by this man? The article certainly doesn’t mention it.
I don’t know anything about this man and I am not saying that he is innocent or guilty, just pointing out that we can’t draw any logical conclusions from this article.
The fact is that such things have happened. The Sifrei Shailos Uteshuvos are full of such charlatans who caused devastation to so many. The question is whether this man is one of them or not. The most important thing is that it is kedai for everyone to know that appearances are often a lie.
Vehyisem nekiyim.
A yid’s behavior, especially a leader, must always be above suspicion.
A man, especially a teacher or rebbe who insists on his door remaining open at all times (unless his wife is with him) can save himself a world of tzaros.
I could see the downvotes coming and this will porbably be deleted. But I must say this so people are careful. Bresalv is full of crazies on the extreme more than others. The berland and not this guy are all creeps. When you go to Uman and wow its so beautiful ahvas yisroel etc. But lets face it there are way to many druggies and creeps there . this whole nah nach thing is creepy and all the people jumping azre. Yes there are a ton of ehrlicha people and R yakov meir is one too. But many are attaracted to the crazies. Lets be real., And there are way to many creeps. Stay away from breaslav unless its your mesora and minhag or unless you stick to R yakov meir.
Anyo pseudo rabbi or social worker that tells people to cut off complete ties from parents is likely a charlatan
All loshon hara , he hasn’t been convicted, he has a right to trial. Frum sites should stop posting gossip accusations especially when he denies it.
Typical of creepy rabbis we all have heard of or experienced. Interesting that guys would defend a pervert like this instead of excising him from our community like normal people.
Eliezer Berland number two.
If proven guilty, unless I they confine him to solitary, he’ll do the same to his inmates.
וְעַתָּה אִם רַע בְּעֵינֶיךָ אָשׁוּבָהלִּי.
Sounds like a cross between many chasisha rebbes, many Rosh yeshiva, and Lev Tahor .
HaShem should give people brains to think for themselves.
“According to the Center, these testimonies included allegations of: Patterns of dependency and control, severing family ties, exploitation and an atmosphere of fear, all performed under the guise of spiritual authority.”
Lets be honest – How many Chassiduses can be accused of the same thing? It is the sexual problem that is troubleing.
This describes any mainstream typical rebbe of chassidim (okay leave out the sexual abuse), but since he is a breslever, people relate to it as if it’s some kind of unheard abuse l, (of course you might argue that all the rebbe’s abuse, and I don’t necessarily disagree).
