NEW YORK (VINnews) — Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday announced the opening of applications for New York City’s new free 2-K program, a child care initiative that will provide thousands of seats for 2-year-olds in selected neighborhoods beginning this fall.

The first phase of the program will make approximately 2,000 seats available to families in parts of northern Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Officials said the expansion is aimed at helping working parents access affordable early childhood education while reducing the financial burden of child care.
The program will offer both center-based and home-based options, with many of the available seats expected to be in full-day programs operating throughout the year. Eligible families living in participating school districts can apply through June 26.
The rollout marks one of the first major education and child care initiatives announced by the new city administration. State and city leaders said the effort is part of a broader push to increase access to early childhood education and child care services, with plans to expand the program over the coming years.
Supporters say greater access to affordable child care can help children develop key learning and social skills before entering school while enabling more parents to participate in the workforce. Officials described the initiative as a significant step toward expanding early childhood opportunities for families across New York City.
Families can submit applications through the MySchools enrollment system, call the Department of Education’s enrollment hotline at 718-935-2009, or visit a Family Welcome Center for assistance. Applications will remain open through June 26.

how much will it cost the taxpayers? mamzeri is already $5 billion in the red.
Free?? Lot’s of folks are paying for it.
Time for Staten Island to secede….
Programs like these are destroying the child care market for those who are not eligible
The city pays far above market rate for these services so normal businesses that service the community switch over to government voucher programs and many of us can no longer find affordable programs to send our kids if we can’t get vouchers
