ANKARA, Turkey (VINnews) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday rejected an Israeli proposal to formally recognize the mass killings of Armenians during the Ottoman Empire as genocide, calling the initiative politically motivated.

Erdoğan said Turkey rejects the accusation that the Ottoman Empire committed genocide against Armenians and maintained that Turkish history does not include acts of genocide or colonialism. He also accused Israel of using the issue to divert attention from the war in Gaza.
The comments came after Israel’s Cabinet approved a proposal introduced by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to recognize the Armenian genocide. The measure still requires approval by Israel’s parliament before becoming official policy.
Turkey has long opposed international recognition of the events of 1915 as genocide, arguing that the deaths occurred during the turmoil of World War I and disputing the legal characterization of the events. Many historians and more than 30 countries, including the United States, have recognized the killings as genocide.
Relations between Israel and Turkey have deteriorated sharply in recent years, with both governments frequently criticizing each other’s policies over regional conflicts and the war in Gaza.
