Mamdani NY: Photo of Wounded Jewish Victim Sparks Fear, Outrage as Critics Blame Mayor’s Rhetoric

NEW YORK (VINnews) — A photograph showing a Jewish man clutching his chest after he was allegedly stabbed on Manhattan’s Upper West Side has intensified fear within New York City’s Jewish community, as police investigate whether the attack was motivated by antisemitism.

The image of Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus, wearing a yarmulke and sitting on a sidewalk after the attack, spread widely on social media Friday, fueling renewed concerns about rising antisemitic violence.

Police say 51-year-old Raul Morales is suspected of attacking Grunhaus with a screwdriver before allegedly assaulting an Asian man nearby with a knife. According to police and witnesses, Morales allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attacks. Investigators are examining whether to pursue hate crime charges.

The attacks have prompted criticism of Mayor Zohran Mamdani from some Jewish leaders and elected officials, who argue his rhetoric and handling of antisemitism have contributed to an atmosphere in which Jews feel increasingly unsafe. Others have rejected that claim, saying the investigation should focus on the suspect and the facts surrounding the attacks.

Neighbors of Morales described him as quiet and cordial, saying they never observed violent behavior before his arrest.

Authorities executed a search warrant at Morales’ apartment Friday as detectives reviewed surveillance footage and gathered evidence. Morales remained in custody, and police said the investigation, including the possible hate crime designation, is ongoing.
