POSTVILLE, IOWA (VINnews) – A major fire broke out early Tuesday at the Agri Star Meat & Poultry plant, one of the world’s largest kosher meatpacking facilities, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and prompting a multi-agency response across northeast Iowa.

The blaze was reported shortly after 4 a.m. at the sprawling processing plant on North West Street. Multiple fire departments from the region responded as heavy smoke billowed from the facility, visible for miles and drifting into neighboring Fayette County.

Agri Star confirmed the fire in a Facebook post around 9 a.m., stating that emergency crews had been on scene since early morning and were actively working to contain the flames. “The safety of our team members, emergency responders, and the surrounding community remains our highest priority,” the company said. Officials indicated disruptions to distribution are expected.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage remain under investigation.

The city of Postville urged residents to conserve water to support firefighting efforts. Fayette County Emergency Management issued a smoke advisory, warning of potential air quality and visibility issues, particularly near Clermont. Officials advised vulnerable individuals to limit outdoor activity, keep windows closed if smoke is heavy, and exercise caution while driving.

Agri Star is Allamakee County’s largest employer and a major supplier of kosher beef and poultry. The plant, formerly known as Agriprocessors, was founded by the Rubashkin family and acquired in 2009 by interests associated with Canadian businessman Hershey Friedman. It has faced previous incidents, including a smaller boiler-room fire in May and an explosion in 2021 that injured two workers.
The fire continued to burn for hours Tuesday morning as crews worked to bring it under control. Local news outlets shared viewer photos and video showing flames along the roof and walls and aerial ladder trucks applying water.
This is a developing story.

Animals are better than people!
I wish this fear-mongering regarding kosher meat and chicken, its kashrus and price would stop.It appears that the main shchita floors were not seriously affected and should be up and running in time for Yom Tov. In the interim ,the company is seeking alternative temporary plants.in regards to the the areas seriously impacted, they are looking for plants that can produce for them while they rebuild.
Iy’h we will all have food for yom tov, with the usual standard of kashrus and prices within reason.
An industry oldtimer
