U.S. Ambassador, European Rabbis Reject Moshe Aryeh Friedman, Say He Represents Only Himself

NEW YORK (VINnews) – U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Bill White and senior European rabbinical leaders have forcefully rejected allegations made by Belgian activist Moshe Aryeh Friedman linking President Donald Trump to an ongoing Belgian investigation into ritual Jewish circumcisions, saying Friedman does not represent the country’s Jewish community and has no recognized rabbinic authority.

The dispute began after Friedman alleged that a commemorative diamond ring presented to Trump by Belgium’s diamond industry during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States was intended to influence Belgian authorities investigating two mohalim, or Jewish ritual circumcisers.

White dismissed the allegation as baseless and said Friedman has no standing to speak on behalf of Belgium’s Jewish community.

“Moshe Aryeh Friedman represents no recognized Jewish institution or community. He represents no one,” White said in a statement. He added that Friedman has no mandate from the Belgian Jewish community, does not lead any recognized synagogue or congregation and holds no official religious position in Belgium.

White said the Central Israelite Consistory of Belgium, the country’s officially recognized representative body for Judaism, has consistently referred to him as “Mr. Friedman,” rather than “Rabbi Friedman,” and said Friedman’s claim to rabbinic status has long been disputed.

The Rabbinical Centre of Europe, representing hundreds of rabbis across the continent, also distanced itself from Friedman, saying he holds no recognized position within Belgium’s Jewish community and does not represent any established Jewish institution. The organization announced it would convene a special rabbinical court to review his conduct following what it called repeated actions harmful to Jewish communal interests.

Friedman was raised in NY’s Satmar Hasidic community but has for many years been estranged from mainstream Orthodox Jewish institutions. He has become a controversial figure through his public criticism of established Jewish organizations and Israeli government policies. Belgian Jewish organizations have repeatedly said he does not represent the country’s Jewish community.

White said Friedman’s self-described rabbinic status has been challenged for decades, citing statements by the Jewish Community of Vienna dating to 2006 that, according to the ambassador, said Friedman never received a recognized rabbinic diploma and did not hold an official rabbinic position.

The ambassador also pointed to Friedman’s participation in a 2006 conference in Tehran hosted by Iran’s government, where he was photographed with then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The conference drew widespread international condemnation because it included Holocaust deniers, revisionists and antisemitic speakers.

White said Friedman has remained isolated from recognized Jewish institutions since settling in Belgium and has repeatedly clashed with the Jewish community through legal proceedings involving Jewish schools, support for efforts to ban kosher slaughter, his involvement in the ongoing dispute over ritual circumcision and, most recently, what White described as the “ring affair.”

He also alleged that Friedman has associated with controversial individuals, including appearing at the trial of former Syrian fighter Jejoen Bontinck and publicly describing Kaoutar Fal as a close friend. White noted that Belgian authorities later ordered Fal to leave the country after determining she posed a potential threat to national security.

White said the issue was not Friedman’s political views but what he described as a longstanding pattern of presenting himself to journalists, politicians and public officials as an authoritative Jewish or rabbinic voice despite lacking recognition from any established Jewish institution.

“I urge media organizations, politicians and public authorities to describe him accurately,” White said. “Not as a representative of the Jewish community, not as an authoritative rabbinical spokesperson, but as an individual activist who speaks solely on his own behalf.”

The Rabbinical Centre of Europe echoed that position, saying Friedman has no mandate to represent European Jewry and that his actions reflect only his personal views.

Belgian authorities continue investigating allegations involving two mohalim who performed ritual circumcisions, a case that has raised concerns among Jewish organizations about religious freedom and the future of brit milah in Belgium.
