Tlaib, a member of the informal progressive group known as the Squad, defeated challengers Shanelle Jackson and Byron Nolen. With results showing her capturing roughly 64% to 65% of the vote, according to The Associated Press and other tallies, the four-term incumbent faces little threat in the November general election.

Her victory caps a primary season in which progressive and socialist-aligned candidates strengthened their foothold in the Democratic Party. The Democratic Socialists of America expanded its influence beyond established figures, helping unseat two longtime Democratic incumbents.

In New York’s 13th District, DSA member and community organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in the June primary. Espaillat had held the seat for multiple terms.

In Colorado’s 1st District, democratic socialist Melat Kiros, a first-time candidate, ousted 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in the June 30 primary. DeGette had represented the Denver-area seat for nearly 30 years.

The results mark a reversal from the aftermath of the 2020 elections, when moderate Democrats including then-Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia urged the party never to use the words “socialist” or “socialism” again, arguing the rhetoric had cost seats in competitive districts.

Tlaib and her progressive allies contended at the time that left-leaning platforms would shape the party’s direction. The 2026 primary outcomes have provided them with fresh evidence of growing influence within Democratic ranks.
