Mamdani’s Trademark Smile Masks a Politician Consumed by Criticism, NY Post Reports

NEW YORK (VINnews) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has cultivated a public image built around a constant smile, polished social media videos and an unflappable demeanor, but behind the scenes the first-term mayor has developed a reputation as unusually sensitive to criticism, according to a New York Post report citing more than a dozen anonymous political insiders.

The report, published Thursday by the New York Post, said elected officials, political consultants and government operatives described Mamdani as frequently contacting critics after public disagreements, harboring grudges over perceived slights and closely monitoring negative media coverage. The sources spoke anonymously, saying they feared political repercussions.

According to the newspaper, Mamdani’s smiling public persona contrasts with his private interactions. One political consultant told the Post the mayor struggles to handle criticism from elected officials, while another source said he is driven by concerns over negative press and frequently reaches out after public criticism.

The Post reported that Mamdani became frustrated after Jewish community leaders urged him to tone down his rhetoric toward Israel following an alleged antisemitic stabbing on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Sources said the mayor personally contacted at least one elected official who attended the news conference, objecting to suggestions that his recent video calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal” had helped inflame tensions.

The newspaper said Mamdani’s carefully managed online image has been central to his political success. His TikTok and Instagram videos helped propel him from a little-known state lawmaker to mayor, and City Hall has continued emphasizing digital outreach through a greatly expanded communications operation.

According to the report, several insiders said the mayor’s office worked to limit stories viewed as politically damaging, including after Queens Borough President Donovan Richards criticized the Democratic Socialists of America on social media. Sources told the Post that a staff member unsuccessfully sought to have the post removed before it generated additional news coverage.

The newspaper also reported that Mamdani contacted elected officials after they criticized his budget proposals and tax policies, and that several political operatives viewed negative news coverage or critical social media posts as the quickest way to receive a response from the mayor or his staff.

The Post noted that despite maintaining his trademark smile in public — including while being booed during a recent NYPD event on Staten Island — several insiders described a different demeanor behind closed doors, saying the mayor could become cold or terse with those who publicly challenged him.

City Hall rejected the characterization. Senior spokeswoman Dora Pekec told the Post that Mamdani’s focus “has and always will be how best to deliver for New Yorkers” and said he views city and state elected officials as partners in building a safer and more affordable city.

The newspaper also included more favorable assessments from some sources, who described Mamdani as engaged in policy discussions, willing to ask questions and receptive to learning about issues outside his expertise.
