Spain, Italy Near Tourism Capacity Limits, TUI Chief Warns

MADRID (VINnews) — Spain and Italy are approaching the limits of their tourism capacity this summer, according to the chief executive of TUI, one of Europe’s largest travel operators.

Sebastian Ebel said Spain is almost fully booked, leaving little room for further growth in one of the continent’s most popular destinations. The warning comes as southern Europe records exceptionally high visitor numbers.

Spain is on track to welcome about 100 million international arrivals this year. Popular sites in both countries are reporting high occupancy rates, while local communities face growing pressure from overcrowding.

Residents in several Spanish and Italian cities have staged protests against mass tourism. In response, governments have introduced higher tourist taxes and placed new restrictions on short-term rentals and cruise ship traffic.

Ebel said overall demand remains strong but is beginning to shift toward destinations that still have capacity to expand, including Egypt and Turkey. TUI is prepared to reallocate flights and hotel capacity flexibly as booking patterns change.

Travelers are also showing greater sensitivity to price and the type of holiday available, he added.
