JERUSALEM (VINnews) – An ultra-Orthodox Torah student from Jerusalem’s Ramot neighborhood has been held at Israel’s Military Prison No. 10 for about a week after being arrested at a military recruitment office, according to a report by Kikar Hashabbat.

The man, identified as Yitzchak David Lamet, is described by acquaintances as a devoted and quiet Torah scholar. He reportedly went to the recruitment office on the advice of a community activist to resolve his status as a yeshiva student, but was arrested and transferred to military custody.
Friends say Lamet lacks the backing of a major Hasidic court or powerful network of communal activists, leaving his case without the public campaign that often accompanies arrests of other members of the ultra-Orthodox community.
“He simply fell through the cracks,” acquaintances said.
The arrest comes only weeks after Lamet and his wife welcomed a son. The family has already celebrated the baby’s brit milah, while his wife is now preparing for the upcoming pidyon haben ceremony without her husband.
Friends expressed frustration that the case has received relatively little public attention.
“If he were a follower of a prominent rebbe, the whole world would be shaking,” one acquaintance said, questioning whether an avreich without influential connections receives less support.
His acquaintances are calling on community activists and other relevant officials to intervene and seek assistance for Lamet and his family.

What message does this convey?
If you are connected you can easily get off the draft. If you are a member of Neturei karta, Satmar or any other such group like Eida hacreida you will not be drafted. They speak mostly Yiddish and don’t know modern Hebrew like the yeshivas crowd. They have a special exemption. They don’t ever get locked up. To deal with them to join the Israeli army is too complicated. Same goes sometimes with the kahanist as well.
If the stupid govt thinks this will help attract more charedim they have loose screws. I think the govt is right idealogocally but to lock people up for that?
Showing pity for the wrong person here- plenty of frum boys and families whose wives and kids have been without fathers for more than 500 of the last 1000 days, serving in the reserves, while their businesses and marriages suffer. Election day is coming, and the more understanding Charedim better figure out how to bridge this obligation, because their political cover is about to disappear.
If he agrees to do his moral and legal duty and serve in the IDF, then he will be released immediately. No Problem.
