JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A 12th-grade student from Rehovot, Yotam Budnik, has drawn attention after winning a gold medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics in Uzbekistan and displaying an Israeli flag on the podium despite restrictions preventing Israeli participants from competing under their national flag.

Budnik, who represented Israel at the prestigious international computer science competition, reportedly took an Israeli flag from his pocket after receiving his gold medal and draped it around himself while standing on the podium.
The organizers subsequently demanded that he return the medal. Budnik refused.
According to accounts of the incident, organizers then confiscated his certificate and removed his ranking from the competition’s official website.
Budnik said he had no regrets about displaying the flag, arguing that political considerations should have no place in an international scientific competition.
“The law that prevents me from waving the flag is based only on politics, and I thought there was no place for that in a scientific competition,” he said.
The incident has sparked criticism of the decision to penalize the Israeli student, with supporters praising Budnik for standing by his national identity despite the consequences.
Beyond his achievement as a gold medalist in one of the world’s leading competitions for young computer scientists, Budnik’s decision to display the Israeli flag has turned him into a symbol of determination and national pride.

The guy is a hero, willing to sacrifice his personal well-being for the tzibur. I wish our contemporary yeshivos would produce talmidim with such depth of character and willingness to play as a team.
The point is not the flsg per se, as all flags (except the organization’s own flag and host country) are barred. The point is that Isarel as a country is barred and he had to compete as an individual insteda of as an Israeli, and that even without wavin the flag his accomplishmnet would not be credited to Israel.
Perhaps he should have waved the Nazis flag that would have been okay
