NASHVILLE (VINnews) — Dolly Parton’s Wikipedia page was vandalized with a Nazi swastika and antisemitic slurs within hours of the country music star’s death, the Campaign Against Antisemitism said Wednesday.

Parton, 80, died Tuesday at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville after what her representatives described as a brief battle with cancer. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced the death on behalf of the family.
Screenshots circulated online showed her name replaced with the phrase “Jew lover,” her photograph swapped for the flag of Nazi Germany, and another portion of the page altered to read “Adam Lanza Was A Hero.” Lanza carried out the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The youngest victim was 6-year-old Noah Pozner, who was Jewish.
The “Jew lover” wording appeared to refer to Parton’s long professional and personal relationship with Sandy Gallin, the Jewish talent manager who represented her for about 25 years from the 1970s through the 1990s.
Wikipedia’s volunteer editors and automated filters reversed the changes shortly after they appeared, the organization and news reports said. Wikipedia is an open, publicly editable encyclopedia; the alterations were vandalism, not a system breach.
A Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson said: “Dolly Parton’s Wikipedia page was vandalised with a swastika and the words ‘Jew lover’ just hours after she died, we understand. These vile edits are no longer there, but the idea that someone would choose to exploit her death to spread antisemitic abuse is utterly despicable. It takes a truly warped mind to turn a moment of mourning into an outlet for hatred.”
Parton was not Jewish. She often spoke warmly of Gallin. After his death, she recalled that people “couldn’t quite get how the Christian Southern girl and the New York Jewish boy could have so much in common. But it was real.”
Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on Jan. 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, she became one of country music’s most decorated artists, with more than 100 million records sold, hits including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” and a wide philanthropic record through the Imagination Library and other projects.
Seaver said his aunt “lived in the light” and “never saw a door she couldn’t open.”
There was no immediate public comment from the Wikimedia Foundation on the identity of the editor or editors responsible.
Dolly Parton was an outstanding human being. Immensly talented and a beautiful heart. She gave away over 300 million books!
