NEW YORK (VINnews) — Surveillance video posted Sunday by Manhattan Shomrim appears to show the assault of a Hasidic Jewish man in Midtown Manhattan the previous Monday.

The incident occurred near 47th Street and Sixth Avenue, according to Manhattan Shomrim. The group said the suspect approached the man, stole his hat and punched him in the temple while shouting antisemitic and derogatory remarks.

The suspect fled the scene but was later arrested after the NYPD responded to the incident. Manhattan Shomrim said the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit is investigating the case.
The suspect was released without bail, according to the group, but is expected to face assault and antisemitic hate crime charges.
Manhattan Shomrim thanked the responding officers and its volunteers for assisting the victim and urged anyone who witnesses an antisemitic attack to call 911.

The protection of every person’s physical safety and dignity is a core function of society. When that protection fails, the community feels the impact. Supporting those affected by such incidents is a way to reinforce the social bonds that hold us together.
I hate to harp on the poor innocent victim, but he’s twice as tall as the perpetrator, yet he does absolutely nothing to defend himself. Jews need to grow out of this passivity culture of ours.

The problem with sometimes fighting back is they would either arrest both parties or let both go without arrest. I can tell you when I was young and very trained I would have followed this guy to a secluded spot with no witnesses and took away his cap and knocked his teeth out. Today with cameras all over you have to be careful. In my days there were no street cameras and the dozen or so fights I had both in Brooklyn streets and subways plus in Israel at shar schem were pretty wild. Today things are different as anti semitism is nothing compared to the 1970s when gangs of punks hung out in Boro park and trains were very dangerous.

This is not just an assault; it is an attack on a person for who they are. When a man is targeted because he is Jewish, it affects everyone. We must stand against this hatred and ensure that such acts are met with real consequences.
If the Jewish guy was not on his phone and paying attention this would’ve never happened get off the stinking telephone you’re walking down a busy street or anywhere else pay attention. Make that your New Year’s Resolution.
