Secular Woman Ate Bacon On Ichilov Hospital Plate To Protest Shabbat Closure Of Food-Ordering Machines

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A confrontation over Shabbat food arrangements at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital has sparked a new controversy over religious accommodation in Israel’s public healthcare system after a postpartum woman reportedly ordered bacon, placed it on a hospital plate and ate it in protest of the maternity ward’s food machines being shut down on Shabbat.

The incident was publicized by activist Naor Narkis, who presented the woman’s actions as a protest against what he described as “religious coercion.” Narkis praised the woman online and wrote that “secular women should not be messed with after childbirth.”

The incident has drawn criticism from the religious public, with concerns that using hospital dishes for non-kosher food could compromise equipment designated for kosher patients.

According to Ichilov, however, the hospital did not leave postpartum women without food. Ichilov Medical Center said the food machines in the maternity wards are part of a new pilot program designed to allow patients and their families to obtain meals independently at convenient times.

Because the hospital has not yet found a halachically acceptable way to operate the machines on Shabbat, they are turned off during the Sabbath.

But the hospital said this does not mean that patients go without meals. “Food is brought out of the kitchen and distributed by the staff as usual, in accordance with the rules of kashrut and as is customary in all departments,” Ichilov said.

The hospital explicitly rejected the suggestion that postpartum women were effectively being “starved” on Shabbat, calling that claim “completely baseless.” The hospital also said that dishes suspected of having come into contact with the bacon were removed from service and discarded.

The controversy is not merely about what an individual patient chose to eat. Hospitals in Israel maintain kosher kitchens and designated food-service systems in order to accommodate religious patients, including patients who require strictly kosher food.

Israel’s Chief Rabbinate says public hospitals are legally required to provide kosher and religious services around the clock, including on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Its guidelines cover hospital kitchens, food transportation on Shabbat and supervision of food brought into medical facilities.

Consequently, deliberately placing non-kosher meat on a hospital plate can create a separate problem for the institution: the hospital may no longer be able to use that particular dish for patients who rely on the hospital’s kosher food system.

That is apparently why Ichilov decided to dispose of the dishes involved rather than return them to circulation.

Ichilov’s official website provides a somewhat different picture from the claim that religious arrangements prevent mothers from receiving food on Shabbat. The Liss Maternity Hospital specifically advertises services for observant mothers, including mehadrin kosher meals throughout the week and on Shabbat, available through the maternity ward staff. The hospital also provides Shabbat elevators, Shabbat-approved hot-water urns and hotplates, and other accommodations for observant patients.

Ichilov’s broader religious-services page likewise states that its hospital kitchen operates under a Shabbat protocol and rabbinic supervision, while Shabbat meals are provided to patients.

The dispute therefore appears to center specifically on the new self-service food machines, rather than on the availability of food at the hospital generally.

Why does the hospital offer Pork ר”ל? Unless she ordered it from outside sources? The article isn’t clear.

Regardless, we should be thankful she didn’t murder her child.

I feel awful for her and even more do for her child. This was a premeditated provocation. She came to the hospital prepared to cause this controversy. She expected it would cause a storm. Best would have been not to give her the coverage she begged for!
Whatever! It’s water under the bridge! It shows how much harder we must try to bring these people תחת כנפי השכינה

If the treifus wasn’t hot from kli rishon, there wasn’t any other kli rishon exposure, and the plate was washed in sink under not-hot water to avoid irui kli rishon, then the plate shouldn’t become treif.
Ask your poseik; I am not one.

She should choke on it!
With all that’s going on in Israel and worldwide, now is not the time to seek controversy.

She had a point!! –
The machines are there for whoever wants to get a better meal or at a different time. They should be still on on shabbos. Those that keep shabbos should not use it, those that don’t keep shabbos and want a special or different meal especially a mother who just gave birth, should be allowed to put money into the machine and buy it.
She has a right as a not shomer shabbos to get herself a meal just like she can use her phone during shabbos if she wants to. BN forcing others to be religious is going to backfire and it is already happening. The supreme court is going to keep ruling it is a democracy and her rights to get different better food was violatived and she can sue the hospital.
All we are going to do is get others angry and they are going to flaunt their rights and fight back. Every pesach they are going to bring in full loaf of bread and eat it right in front of everyone. We have to be smarter and not force religion down others throat.
