Trump attorney Harvey Oyer III asked Palm Beach County commissioners Thursday to consider designating Trump International Golf Club as a U.S. Presidential Golf Course, according to a letter reported by The Palm Beach Post.
The proposal calls for the course to be available to past, current and future presidents, as well as visiting foreign heads of state. It also envisions dedicated presidential lodging at the property.
The Trump family owns the golf club, but the course sits on Palm Beach County-owned land leased to the club under the terms of a settlement involving Palm Beach International Airport.
Under the proposal, the golf club would provide access to its facilities at no cost to the federal government and work with the General Services Administration and Secret Service to develop appropriate presidential lodging. Trump’s club would pay for construction of the lodging, according to the proposal.
Palm Beach County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo called the idea a potentially “remarkable and historic opportunity” for the county. He said the property’s location near the airport and existing security infrastructure could make it well suited for the proposal.
The proposal remains subject to review and discussions with county and federal officials.
