Charedi Party Set to Make History With First Woman on Knesset List

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Dr. Nechumi Yaffe, a Charedi researcher and academic, is joining the HaTzibur HaCharedi party and will run for the 26th Knesset, marking the first time a Charedi party running for the Knesset has included a woman on its slate, according to Israel National News.

Yaffe, a Jerusalem resident and mother of three, is a researcher in political psychology and a senior faculty member at Tel Aviv University. She has also spent the past year working with Harvard University on research examining Israel’s Charedi community and regional economy.

In 2020, Yaffe was appointed an adviser on Charedi affairs to the National Security Council, where she focused on challenges facing the community, including poverty.

Following the Oct. 7 attack, she established a Charedi emergency response center that mobilized thousands of volunteers to assist evacuees from communities near the Gaza border and support bereaved families.

Yaffe grew up in Jerusalem’s Slonim Chasidic community and has worked in Charedi education, teaching Jewish law and history and developing history curricula used by Charedi seminaries.

Her entry into HaTzibur HaCharedi comes as Israel’s Charedi political system undergoes a period of change, with new political frameworks seeking to challenge the established parties and broaden their representation.

Moti Leitner, representing HaTzibur HaCharedi, welcomed Yaffe’s decision and praised her decades of work in education and academia.

The candidacy is also significant because women traditionally have not appeared on the Knesset lists of Israel’s established Charedi parties.

Taking a big gamble that they will make the threshold, and possibly burning many votes

When you hear they have a woman on their slate, that they are teeming up with Ofer Winter, don’t hear about which Rabbanim support them, don’t hear what they plan on doing to protect learners, you can begin to wonder what exactly makes them Charedi other than appearance…
As RebFauci noted, they’re probably not passing the threshold, so they will just waste thousands of votes.

When women are attacked on mehadrin buses in the name of fake halacha, it’s time to question carefully the “daas torah” that led us to here. There is no halacha against women serving in the knesset, as its perfectly halachic for communities to vote females into office. The ptohibition only refers to appointed positions without the consent of the people.

This is not a Chariedi party it has below zero chance of passing the threshold, people are only so dumb and they see through this. “Wasting right wing votes is a Eisenkot lefty party not a Chariedi part”.

Israel as well as America have all kinds of levels of observance. There are rabbis who may even be considered Gedolim that are minipulated by askanim big time. They tell them baloney stories and they sign papers nisht gestogin in nist gefloygen. Real rabbis watch what they say and sign. I have seen such fake stuff and I am sure many have seen or heard as well. Didn’t a woman become mayor of Beth shemesh a few years ago. Basically there are working chareidim who are more modern. Their beards may be a little trimmed but they learn and Daven.

The work of building community support and responding to urgent needs often falls to people with deep roots in their communities. Dr. Yaffe’s background in education and community organizing shows this. Her work setting up an emergency response center after the October 7 attack highlights the practical action that makes a real difference.

Dr. Nechumi Yaffe’s background shows someone deeply invested in her community, from education to emergency response. Her work with Harvard and the National Security Council, focusing on the Charedi community and its economy, highlights a practical approach to public service. This move into politics, especially given her experience mobilizing volunteers after October 7, speaks to a desire to effect change directly.

The fact that they’ve put women on their slate is a great infraction. It could have far reaching consequences, much beyond what is visible to “the naked eye”. That, and not being backed by rabbonim. Hashem should save us from them.

The gemarah’s principal of hadras bas melech penima would clearly proclude the promotion of women to such positions. This principal actually has a number of nafka meenas, among those the halachah that you should give tsedakah first to a girl, and it is from this yesod that the Rambam rules to preclude women from serarah (to my understanding). It is a real thing that women shouldn’t go out of the house (obviously not literally).
