Williamsburg, NY – New York City fire officials investigating the overnight blaze in Williamsburg that took the life of an NYPD firefighter say preliminary reports point to an AC unit inside one the building’s apartments that caused an electrical fire.

ONLINE.WSJ.com (http://on.wsj.com/1qBo1et) reports that one fire officials said that a resident of the building told investigators that due to lack of power in his bedroom he had strung together a power strip and an extension cord in order to plug in the air-conditioning unit.
The resident admitted to having several other electrical devices plugged into the same strip and that he had experienced a burning smell prior to leaving the building.
Sources say the resident admitted to being gone form the building for about three hours prior to the fire, which broke out around 9 p.m.
Reps for the NYCHA said the agency is working with the FDNY in conducting the investigation.
