Israel – The Rabanut Yerushalayim mehadrin kashrus supervision under the posek Rav Eliyahu Schlesinger is making use of new technological inventions to insure that its kashrus supervision is the highest available.

Last Monday, Rav Schlesinger visited the Jerusalem wholesale vegetable and fruit market in Givat Shaul, to inaugurate the new identification system. The new system identifies the fingerprints of the mashgichei kashrus, insuring that they arrive at 5 in the morning and leave only at the closing of the market. The advantage of the system is that it responds only to the mashgichei kashrus, an improvement over the card system which can be used by someone else.
There is need for close supervision particularly of fruits and vegetables, because the market is still full of fruits which were grown using the heter mechira, which are unacceptable to mehadrin kashrus agencies. During his Monday visit, Rav Schlesinger also verified that the sixth year and non-Jewish produce was completely separate from heter mechira fruits, and that all fruits and vegetables had maaseros and terumos taken from it where necessary. He also checked that the wax which is smeared on various fruits, particularly apples, is from a kosher source.
To obviate farmers from picking their produce on Shabbos, the market only opens late on Sunday and early Monday morning.
Now that we have a system in place to assure that the mashgiach is at the plant (no one else has punched in for him), how do we assertain that he is awake on the job. What is the world coming to if we hire mashgiachim that we cant trust.
Its really tragic for yidden when this so-called “posek” rabbi Schlessinger, has to highlight the “new technology” to keep the mashgichim from lying about their hours which they were apparently doing under the old card system for tracking their whereabouts. What happened to the old-fashioned idea that a mashgiach kashruth was presumed to be a frumme yid with a minimal level of yiras shamayim. Now, we need high tech devices just to be sure they are even physically where they are being paid to be. How can we rely on their word about treifus if they cannot be presumed to be telling the truth about their work hours….what a shanda
First of all, we have to start somewhere. This is like a new phone or a new computer program. The first generation of it is going to have a few flaws and we will get a second generation idea prepared and a third as needed and so on. But, this is a start. Kol hahaschalos kashos.
Rav Eliyahu Schlesinger is making use of new technological inventions to insure that its kashrus supervision is the highest available. ..It really sounds like they are trying to make sure their Mashgichim are there on time…..Thats not too insuring that their kashrus standards are the highest available. I would think that you should trust your own mashgiach and not worry that he will have someone else sign in for him.
The Rav you referred to as a “so-called posek” is the author of multiple seforim on halacha and is Rav Elyashuv’s appointee.
To the first 2 posts, advanced technologies is always a good idea, doesn’t mean workers are not trusted.
Is it permissible to use this technology? It wasn’t available in the time of the gedolim. Can a lesser egenration add to the halucha?
so he clocks in gos home comes back at the end of the day and clocks out.ether its someone you trust or there is no point.
nothing is foolproof ,not even a fingerprint .
no technology will compensate for the lack of yiras shamayim in a mashgiach.
What if he cuts his finger off and leaves it for someone else to check out? You never thought of that because you’re not so smart! the Chelmer Rov aka Gov.Paterson.
Ankle bracelets or a gps inplanted chip. Only way to know if the mashgiach is where he is supposed to be. How about a “pacemaker” like device to keep him awake??
