Mayor Noramie Jasmine — who has been on the job for a little over a month — is trying to comfort the 3,000 Haitian Americans in her village while she awaits news about her husband Ronald, who she hasn’t spoken to until last Sunday.
“I ask each of you to pray for his well being,” she said.
Jasmine along with other local leaders held an afternoon conference call with Haitian American elected officials from across the country in order to coordinate relief efforts by Friday. She urged people to donate to charities — including the American Red Cross.
Jasmine said she will do all she can to be strong and help support her two sons during this difficult time.
Many people with relatives in Haiti have not been able to get in contact with family members since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the island at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
“Natural disasters affect our fate and our resolve….together we can find strength through struggle,” she said.
