Saratov, Russia – A homemade explosive device went off near a synagogue in Saratov, a city in the Volga River Valley between Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
Security was able to quickly extinguish the fire, which caused minor damage to the building.

"The community is in shock," Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, Moscow's chief rabbi and a leader of KEROOR, an Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization to which the Saratov shul belongs, said. "There is no doubt in the community that the intention was to burn the synagogue down."
As of Sunday afternoon, it was not known yet whether police had opened an investigation into the incident. [JTA]
