The new bill from Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries would require city police to live within the five boroughs, in order to better know their neighbors and show more sensitivity.
The NYPD came under fire after it was revealed some officers allegedly posted negative comments about the West Indian Day Parade on Facebook.
“Those who have no real understanding of the individuals they are policing, the individuals they are serving, will be inclined to disrespect us or far worse,” Jeffries said.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says an Internal Affairs investigation found at least 20 Facebook comments about the parade may have come from officers.
This is one of the better things I have heard from a politico in a while. Most recruits that trend to be coming from out of NYC and have been brought up watching cop shows on TV which dont represent the true melting pot which NY is.
This is the oldest idea that will NEVER EVER be implemented due the power of the PBA.
they probabbly cant afford to live in the city on what they earn
Excuse me but I thought this was done years ago. I truly believe;
1, We would provide jobs to NYC residents
2, Cops would better understand issues like parking
3, We would have thousands more NYC residents armed off-duty
Why don’t they pass a law saying that the NYPD should hire the best possible recruits regardless of where they live?
Another attempt by a black racist to put the blame on everything and everyone but their own people. When will these media hungry politicians just wise up and get their own to behave like civilized people should.
And they should serve at least 1 shift in the Precinct that they reside in. Nothing like having pride in your neighborhood – and knowing the place as well.
It is a good idea for police officers to live in there.. i hope their salaries will rise to meet the cost of living in the city. We considered moving NYC but with the price range, is out of our means.
So an Italian from Howard Beach is going to have more of a love for Blacks than an Italian from Levittown? On the contrary, Whites who live near Blacks seem to have more pent up rage against them than those who live in the suburbs.
on the one hand it’s a nice idea to have a shift in your neighborhood. one the other hand it’s not a good idea. why, you may ask…i’ll tell you. would you want someone you arrested to know what neighborhood you live in and possibly follow you when the guy gets out of jail . see you with your children and spouse? i would not.
