Kashrus Alert.
United Kingdom – Makers of Britain’s most popular chocolate bars, including Mars, Snickers, Maltesers and Milky Ways, admitted that they now contain an ingredient derived from a cow’s stomach.
This month, Masterfoods began using animal rennet to produce the whey needed for its products, rather than a vegetarian alternative. Rennet is extracted from the stomach-lining of slaughtered newborn calves, and is used in traditional cheese production in central Europe. In Britain a microbial alternative made from mould is used.[telegraphuk]
We are trying to investigate if the same is with USA Chocolates.
If you check out the the London Bais Din site, they clearly address this issue and pasken that it is still 100% Kosher. The reason is that one of the ingredients is whey, (mei chalav in Halacha), and one source of whey is the liquid that is left after cheese is made. As the amount of rennett in the whey is miniscule (the vast majority is in the cheese, which is why the cheese is assur midirabanan, as the rennett is a davar hama’amud), it is muttar lechatchila. The article cited R’ Moshe Feinstein as a source of this psak.
I love the way some bimbos say we have to check it out!
For crying out loud, where is the hashgocha agency and the mashgiach?
How is it that people are not “sure” about the product?
The EU stuff and the USA stuff is not related. The product manufactured in the USA is under the OU. The product there if it is “kosher” is “approved” by LBD. In the USA, the OU would NEVER allow this ingredient to be used.
it’s bottul anyway.
the only reason animal rennet is not good for cheese is b/c it’s a davar ha’maaymud.
Since most customers are goyyim and the product is made for them, it’s not mevatlin issur le’chatchila.
Even if you think I am an apikorus or modernishe, you still have to rely on my kashrus when you come to my house b/c of eid echad neeman b’issurin. And Besides, you are the appikorus if you ignore piskey shulchan aruch. Of course, I allow you to be machmir. But you can’t deny the base halacha.

A different company owns the manafacturing and brand rights in North America. It is manafactured seperately.
