The NYPD plans to use the millions – if approved by President Bush – to install the devices on highways, bridges, tunnels and waterways leading into the city.
Police would put the detectors throughout the city, Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley and New Jersey.
In August, a dirty-bomb scare triggered a massive search for radioactive material within a 50-mile radius of the city. The NYPD found nothing to substantiate the terror threat. [NY Daily News]
