Staten, Island, NY – If the jars of gefilte fish weren’t enough of a tip off, surely the microwaves labeled “meat” and “dairy” were a sure sign that a former staff lounge at Richmond University Medical Center has a new purpose.

The Bikur Cholim room is open for business on the second floor of the West Brighton hospital, conveniently located near the maternity unit but available for all patients and their families.
When you’re in labor, you pack your nightgown but you don’t pack the gefilte fish,” Sheryl Jacobowitz, a representative of Bikur Cholim of Staten Island, said with a laugh.
Observant families with loved ones in the hospital can find kosher food and beverages and a place to pray. For those who cannot travel during the Sabbath or a religious holiday, the room’s recliners, with pillows and blankets available — also offer a place to sleep. People are also welcome to bring their own food and use the kosher microwaves to heat it.
Dr. Michael Moretti, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the hospital, was instrumental in transforming the lounge into the Bikur Cholim room and it’s opening comes at a time when an increasing. [statenislandadvance]
