Police said Avis Stone, 76, was turning left into the Jewish Community Center library when her car collided with a westbound vehicle driven by Vincent Mesce, 22, of West Hartford.
Police said Stone was treated at the scene for her injuries, but died in the ambulance on the way to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Mesce also was taken to St. Francis, but the nature of his injuries was not clear.
Stone was a teacher at the JCC’s Beatrice Fox Auerbach Early Childhood Center for more than 25 years.
“She was a cherished member of our community and we are shocked by this sudden loss,” David Jacobs, executive director of the Mandell JCC, said in a letter sent to the parents of the preschool students.
Jacobs said counselors from Jewish Family Services will help students and parents deal with the loss.
Police have asked witnesses of the accident to call 860-523-2007. The crash remained under investigation Monday evening.
