Baltimore, MD – Just as women were getting ready to light candles this past Shabbos, the blizzard of the century began to hit the state of Maryland, which affected the Baltimore Jewish community.

For just about twenty-eight hours, it snowed within the Eruv of Baltimore, Who received between 20 – 30 inches of snow, along with a thunderstorm late last night.
“This morning it was amazing to see how many observant Jews were brave enough to walk in snow that was at least two feet deep so that they could attend shu”l, Remarked one Baltimore Jewish resident to VIN News.
Only a few of the roads were plowed. Many people had to walk in the paths of others to make their way up and down the hills within the Eruv.
Another Baltimore resident told VIN News, “For many children they have never seen so much snow”, “and you could tell how much they just wanted to play in the snow”.
Gov. Martin O’Malley warned Marylanders that travel would remain difficult “for the next couple of days” and said he would wait until Sunday afternoon to decide whether to open state government on Monday. BWI Marshall Airport will remain closed Sunday and may not open until mid-day on Monday.
Frigid temperatures promised to delay melting, and forecasters were already eyeing a new system that could bring fresh snow to the area late Tuesday.
According to the Baltimore Sun Baltimore city’s Department of Transportation had spread 10,859 pounds of salt on city streets by early afternoon, with another 7,180 pounds remaining, according to Ryan O’Doherty, the mayor’s spokesman. The city has spent $407,823 to date on storm response.
Baltimore County had 380 salt trucks and plows plying suburban and rural roads all day, but roads chief Tim Burgess cautioned it could be days before residential streets got cleared.

I have news for you- the snow blanketed the whole city of Baltimore- not just the orthodox community!!
The message is clear that baltimore was punished for hosting Dwek.
despite more than 2 feet of snow baltimore jews walked to shul….
It’s a winter wonderland! Unbelievably beautiful. No sounds of cars or plows all Shabbos. very peaceful, quiet and serene.
What only the orthodox community had snow!!!!!
it snowed on some non-orthodox Jews as well
Snow is very nice
I think Hashem just wanted to send everyone a message to “chill”
Gosh such attacks! This article is in a paper aimed at the Orthodox community so just relax that the article is also aimed at the Orthodox community. I thought it was a fun, well written piece with great photos!
Just measured…..We Got 33 Inches of snow here in Baltimore…WAY more than a foot as the pic says….
parsha of the 10 commandments! how could u miss it???
baltimore is known for its hachnasos orchim they’re very accepting
Is there a reason why Philly & Baltimore which are further South than NY got much more snow? NY’s snow paled compared to theirs. So I’m curious if anyone knows how that works that despite those cities being more south (hence I’d think they should be warmer and less susceptible to snow blizzards) were blanketed vs NY which is more north (colder)…? Thanks.
Don’t forget the other main Orthodox community in Maryland, Silver Spring. We also got a record snowfall here, if not more snow then Baltimore.
firts of all, the reason Baltimore got so much is that this storm came up the gulf coast (on the south) and mixed with below freezing air from the north…they always produce big snowstorms for us, even though we are further south.
Did you ever notice it’s called a “Blanket of Snow”, you use blanket’s for comforting. So maybe Hashem was comforting the citizens of Baltimore, including the observant, non-observant and our non-Jewish friends.
I think the only group out of all of them that had any real challenge was those who had to walk in over two feet of snow to their destinations. It wasn’t just the frum world who had to go out. There were many walking within the eruv who had to get to work. Some folks worked with the elderly, the sick or disabled, some worked at local stores.
It was absolutely beautiful. In places the snow drifts were over 5′ tall.
I just heard that Baltimore is expected to get 10 more inches of snow Tuesday – Wednesday.
Did we all forget about NJ? NJ got snow too. I was in Lakewood for a Bar Mitzvah this Shabbos and we got a healthy 24 inches. Yup we were knee deep in snow with no eruv to help us out.
Unfortunately Baltimore was hit with much snow. If this were in N.Y it would not be close to as big an issue, for they actually plow there. Unfortunately I was raised in Baltimore, and have been celebrating ever since I left. Comments?
