New York, NY – Developers are being sought for plans that would turn the vacant TWA terminal at New York’s Kennedy Airport into the centerpiece of a boutique hotel.
The once-glamorous terminal was designed by modernist Eero Saarinen (EHR’-oh SAHR’-uh-nehn), whose works include the St. Louis Gateway Arch.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey envisions a 150-room hotel in the space between the old TWA terminal and the new JetBlue building.
Executive Director Chris Ward tells The Wall Street Journal that the plans could result in a hotel with the “hippest, coolest-looking front office.”
The agency says construction could finish two years after a developer is signed.
Some hurdles remain. The TWA terminal is a New York City landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
