New York, NY – Some public-school students may get an unexpected two days off in late June, thanks to the city’s mild winter.

The Post has learned that dozens of principals submitted requests to make June 25 and 26 extra teacher-training days for the new Common Core curriculum.
The school calendar includes extra days in the event of snow, but there was little snow this year.
Days off are important for teachers; especially when paid. The students and parents are irelavant. Enjoy the free days and see a movie.
God forbid that these teachers who have summers, holidays, midwinter, springbreak etc. should have to teach for another 2 days. Another siman of a weak Dor…
We need those days off too. what time do you get up in the morning hard worker?
I am the last one to defend the teacher unions, but the history of teachers pay is actually pretty wacky. in the early days of public schools, teachers were paid their salary over a ten month period. they fought to have that pay spread over the 12 months, because teachers for some reason couldn’t budget the extra 2 months. so it does appear that they get 2 months off, but really they are just taking a 10 month salary over a 12 month year.
But again, its a joke of a job for the pay they get. and i don’t want to hear how the day doesnt really end at 2:30, and that they do work after for hours on end. guess what, the hours are still a joke, and the pay and benefits are ridiculous compared to private sector workforce. There is no reason that this training cannot be done after school hours, or in those 3-4 days f teacher days only in the beginning of the year. I,m sure the kids can learn another 2 days, since the scores in NY stink!
End Public education, put schools in competition, and watch education flourish.
A more careful perusal of the article shows that the teachers are not getting off, just the students. Halevai our yeshivas would have school until June 26.
I work in the school system and wake up at around 6:30 every morning. Yes, the NYC school system does have many vacation days but there is tremendous pressure to live up to standards that are constantly being brought up higher and higher. It is almost impossible, especially when working with a low socio-economic community where there is no parental support, if there are both parents at home-highly unlikely. All in all, the staff working for the NYC DOE deserves to have 2 days at the end of the year to finish up and close the school year like mentchen, instead of coming in after school is officially over to close up shop.
