“The ones I decorated today are community leaders, people who were equally involved in community advocacy and the support of Romania,” Basescu said. “Today’s ceremony is intended not only for those who have done something for their community, for Romania and for our culture, but also it is equally a symbol of my respect for a community that knows how to forgive.”
Chief Rabbi Elyakim Schlesinger, Chairman of the Conservation Hebrew Cemeteries in Europe, was among those who were honored. Rabbi Schlesinger thanked President Basescu and his presidential advisor for their “understanding, care and support,” as well as the Romanian people for the “wisdom and kindness” they have shown to the Jewish community throughout the centuries. The Jews “were always well-received and have found a quiet place in Romania in times of peace,” the rabbi said.
