De Blasio made pre-K the centerpiece of his first year in office. He said Thursday that 50,000 pre-K students have enrolled.
He also pushed back against concerns voiced by Comptroller Scott Stringer that there could be safety problems with some classroom sites.
The mayor said that he did not know “why any public official would want to leave parents with the impression that there’s danger when there isn’t a danger.”
Stringer said his office had yet to receive 70 percent of city contracts with pre-K providers.
He urged City Hall to “stop playing games” and submit contracts for review.
Pre-K will begin Sept. 4 even if there are still missing contracts.
