WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday that President Donald Trump has “tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox” with the targeted killing of Iran’s top general in an airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport.

The former vice president joined other Democratic White House hopefuls in criticizing Trump’s order, saying it could leave the U.S. “on the brink of a major conflict across the Middle East.”

The Pentagon said the U.S. military killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, in Baghdad Friday at the direction of Trump. The attack is expected to draw severe Iranian retaliation against Israel and American interests. The Defense Department said Soleimani “was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.”

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders released a statement saying, “Trump’s dangerous escalation brings us closer to another disastrous war in the Middle East that could cost countless lives and trillions more dollars.”

Democrats acknowledged the threat posed by Soleimani, with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren calling him “a murderer, responsible for the deaths of thousands, including hundreds of Americans.”

However, she added, Trump’s “reckless move escalates the situation with Iran and increases the likelihood of more deaths and new Middle East conflict.”

Entrepreneur Andrew Yang tweeted: “War with Iran is the last thing we need and is not the will of the American people. We should be acting to deescalate tensions and protect our people in the region.”

The attack also drew criticism from Democrats who aren’t running for president. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the administration conducted the airstrike without consultation of Congress or an authorization for use of military force against Iran. She said it “risks provoking further dangerous escalation of violence.”

But Republicans on Capitol Hill stood behind Trump. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said: “I appreciate President Trump’s bold action against Iranian aggression. To the Iranian government: if you want more, you will get more.”

And Sen. James Inhofe, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said: “America does not and should not seek war, but it will respond in kind to those who threaten our citizens, soldiers and friends — as the President has long promised. De-escalation is preferable and possible — but only if our adversaries choose it.”

Yep. It is a risk. Wars are risky. It might cause an increase in violence. Yep, wars tend to get more violent without serious efforts to limit them. But wars cannot be fought without risk. This was probably a good bet.

what’s the difference of killing Suleimeni and killing Bin Laden?

Obama “killed” Bin Laden the U.S.’ arch terrorist and was hailed a “hero”

Trump killed Suleimeni the U.S.’ arch terrorist and s/b hailed a HERO as well

“…Trump may have thought that ordering this hit would bring the same plaudits with as little blowback as hunting down Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of Isis. He would be wrong. The Isis caliphate had collapsed and its fighters had scattered.

“The leader of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds force, on the other hand, was a bearded icon of the Islamic Republic, arguably its second most powerful figure after the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Killing him was a blunt act of war against a substantial regional power. Its half-million-strong armed services are the most potent military force the US has faced since confronting the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army more than 60 years ago in Korea.

“There was nothing inevitable about this conflict. Six years ago the legacy of loathing left by the Islamic Revolution began to fade. There was a multilateral agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear programme in 2015, and an unspoken mutual non-aggression pact with Suleimani during the shared campaign against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq…”

“This is a massive walk up the escalation ladder,’’ wrote Charles Lister of the Middle East Institute. “With Suleimani dead, war is coming — that seems certain, the only questions are where, in what form and when?”

Bruce Riedel, the former C.I.A. officer who spent his life studying the Middle East, and is now at the Brookings Institution, said, “The administration is taking America into another war in the Middle East, bigger than ever.”

What about when Obummer took out Bin-Ladin? Wasn’t that reckless? Did he not start a potential war with our good friend and ally Turkey?

CBS

“So, yes it’s good that [Soleimani’s] gone, but it’s come at an extraordinarily high price,” [former acting and deputy CIA director] Michael Morell said. “And that’s why the Bush administration and the Obama administration chose not to do something like this.”

————————————————

“The targeted killing of Qassem Soleimani, one of Iran’s top military leaders, has escalated tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with Iran vowing revenge. CBS News senior national security contributor, and former acting and deputy CIA director Michael Morell told “CBS This Morning” the drone strike on Soleimani will lead to “dead civilian Americans.”

“Soleimani was an evil genius, he had a lot of American blood on his hands,” Morell said. “The world is a better place without him. The problem is that comes at a very high cost. Number one, there will be dead Americans, dead civilian Americans, as a result of this. Possibly over the next few days in any place where Iran has its proxies, Iraq is the most likely place, but also Lebanon, Bahrain, other places in the Middle East.”

“Morell said Iran would lose the battle if they responded with a military strike on U.S. forces in the region. He said he thinks Iran’s proxies throughout the region will go after civilians, but that’s not all.

“At a time and place of their choosing, they’re going to conduct a terrorist strike that kills a senior American official,” Morell said. “And that could be anywhere in the world.”

“Such an attack could occur on American soil, he said.

“Lebanese Hezbollah, which is one of [Iran’s] closest allies, has contingency plans and those include plans in the United States against U.S. targets,” Morell said. “Such a terrorist attack could occur soon.”

According to Morell, the killing of Soleimani sets a dangerous precedent that senior officials are fair game in the “hybrid, not-yet-at-war kind of scenario that we’re in with Iran.”

“So, yes it’s good that [Soleimani’s] gone, but it’s come at an extraordinarily high price,” Morell said. “And that’s why the Bush administration and the Obama administration chose not to do something like this.”

Trouble with the Dems is that they understand precious little, except that anything Trump does or says is to be challenged. There is a bigger picture here, and none of the Dems were privy to it. This is not Trump or our military being trigger happy. It is apparent that the greatest achievements will never get the nod of congratulations or gratitude from liberal Dems. I feel bad they are so blind and dumb. But I will not use their handicapped intellect as an excuse to console them with elected office. I wish they all get voted out, and rendered politically powerless. Liberalism is a disease, and it is incurable. We can only insure that our governments are free of these brain dead primates. Vote Republican.

I have read all of your entries or most of them carefully and it is apparent that none of you ever served in the military. Iran will choose a soft target which may not be American . Furthermore how sitting in the safety of the US, never involved in arm conflict you can make there statement shows total ignorance. This is not democrats versus this is warfare against q country which has little scruple in killing. Some of the entries are just plain silly. Your ignorance who won WWII a republican president or a democratic president. Saltonstall originally a banker extended a billion dollar loan to bankrupt namely the banker was saltonstall and the recipient Hjalmar Schacht Hitler’s emissary. If democrats understand very little your ignorance is glaring. It is fun reading ignorant stupidities or childish babble

The misguided fools on this site who downplayed the influence of Osama Bin Ladin, are incredible; not only was Bin Ladin responsible for the attacks on 9/11/01, but he was responsible for other attacks on American and western targets, and many American deaths; he was even planning more attacks, at the time of his death, as was his son, who was also liquidated. Joe Biden is a hypocrite; as a U.S. Senator, he approved of the ill conceived invasion of Iraq, in 2003.

Personally, I think that all U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq, as they should never have been sent back there, after they were withdrawn in 2011. In 2008, Bush (#43) approved of the plan to withdraw all American troops from Iraq by December 31, 2011, as the Iraqis wanted them out of there. Then, Iraq cried when it was being attacked by terrorists, and pleaded with Washington to send the troops back. It was a mistake, as they are hated, and are sitting ducks for IED’s, snipers, terrorists, etc. The Iraqis are savages who are corrupt, and don’t know what democracy is. They need a strong ruler to govern them. It is too bad that Saddam Hussein was kicked out, as he knew how to rule with an iron fist. When he was in power, there were no suicide bombers, and there was law and order. Now, Iraq, is in complete chaos, thanks to George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Dick Chaney, and Don Rumsfeld. To their dying days, they will never admit that they made a mistake, with the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Question. It this POTuS doesnt believe the FBI CIA etc unlike Bush who did believe in them he is much worse than Bush ever was attacking Iran ( 100.000s dead and $2Trillion) Bush was wrong but honest. This is wrong and dishonest. He knows all the Fake news CIA, FBI is dishonest and attacks them? 99% of the suicide bombers are Saudis not Iranians. Go to any Hospitals in Brooklyn you will never find a Saudi Doctor but many Iranian Doctors, scientists, nurses, etc. (Even many yeshivah Bochers,Rebbis) Never a Saudi.
