de Blasio’s Explanation for Not Taking Down Post-Funeral Social Media Post Rings Hollow as Reports of Deleted Tweets Surface

NEW YORK (VINnews/Sandy Eller) – Did New York City’s mayor dig himself into an even deeper hole during a May 4th conference call with members of the Orthodox Jewish media?

As previously reported on VIN News (https://bit.ly/2YGjbVs), Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters that he had already expressed his regrets repeatedly for a tweet that singled out the city’s entire Jewish community as social distance violators after crowds packed the streets for the Williamsburg funeral of Rabbi Chaim Mertz on April 28th. Extending an olive branch yet again during the conference call, the mayor said that he had spoken out of passion and frustration adding, “I used words I wish I hadn’t used and I’ve apologized for that and I continue to apologize for that.”

de Blasio glossed over the question asked by one journalist why the problematic tweet hadn’t been removed from his Twitter page if he considered it to be a mistake, only to have a Jewish Press reporter ask him the question yet again. The mayor responded by saying that he wasn’t in the habit of deleting old tweets.

“It’s not something I have a history with, honestly,” said de Blasio, adding, “It’s not my instinct that you take something down because, again, that tends to come with people thinking something inappropriate is going on in a different way and there’s usually controversy.”

Yet de Blasio’s office did exactly that nearly one year ago. The New York Post (https://bit.ly/3cfZAzt) reported that a mayoral tweet issued by the @NYCMayor’sOffice twitter account on the morning that de Blasio announced his presidential campaign quoted conservative author and philosopher Ayn Ran, whose fans include President Donald Trump.

Social media users pounced on the tweet, relishing the irony of a presidential hopeful bent on taking down the president quoting an author favored by Trump. The tweet was deleted shortly thereafter.

Eater New York (https://bit.ly/2L8WRMn) reported that a January de Blasio tweet posted from his @NYCMayor account in honor of National Bagel Day was also deleted. Social media users called the mayor out after he waxed effusive about the toasted whole wheat bagels at Park Slope’s Bagel Hole, which has no toaster. That tweet was deleted and replaced with a similar post that made no mention of toasted bagels.

Former Assemblyman Dov Hikind said that it was clear that the mayor had been less than truthful with the Jewish media when he explained why the post-funeral tweet was still on Twitter.

“I’m asking the mayor to immediately remove that objectionable tweet that he admits was a terrible statement,” Hikind told VIN News. “The whole point of taking it off would be making a statement – a positive one, which he refuses to do. What’s wrong with the mayor?”

de Blasio all his years in public office was very good to the Jewish community.

Off course he shouldn’t of tweeted about the funeral.

He is under enormous pressure from certain people from within our community who are having a problem with Yidden Davening and giving respect at a funeral.

These Chevra are constantly sending out clips showing how we Daven with Minyan and off course they say: Venishmartem meod lenafshtechem.

The Chilul Hashem these folks make and the antisemitism they caused is irreparable.

There is a special Gehonim waiting for them.

If everyone would’ve listened to begin with and not make big funerals and also all shuls would’ve stayed closed this would’ve all been avoided but for some reason people don’t know how to listen to rules especially in boro park and willy you idiots have to learn how to follow rules if Lakewood and all the other communities can follow the rules so can boro park and willy enough with the excuses

We still remember that he demoted Kalman Yeager just for standing up to the evil Sarsour.
Whose fault was that? Also that of the Jews that didn’t listen?
This hypocritical, evil, incompetent moron destroyed years of work by Rudi that finally made this city livable again, and turned it into a public toilet, in which DSNY leaves more filth on the streets than that which as originally put out, and where the cops run away from having water dumped on them.
Probably all on the instructions of his wife.
He’s a sorry excuse for a human being, let alone a mayor.
