MINNEAPOLIS (VINnews) — At a demonstration Saturday in Minneapolis against racism and police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death, Minnesota State congresswoman Ilhan Omar addressed the large crowd of protesters. Omar, a naturalized Somalian refugee who uses her position to fight for the rights of woman and Afro-Americans, referred to the fact that the death of Floyd had taken place in Minnesota and termed the local police “rotten to the root.” She called for the “dismantling” of the local police department, compared it to “cancer” and suggested that abolishing the police department could “allow for something beautiful to arise.”

“That reimagining allows us to figure out what the public safety looks like for us” she stated, to the applause and approval of the crowd.
The protests, although largely peaceful, have continued unabated into the twelfth day of unrest which has also seen violence and looting all across the United States as well as worldwide demonstrations of outrage over the murder of Floyd, who was held down by an officer during arrest until he died.
I hope that this causes her to be voted out next time she’s up for re-election.
I can’t believe that most voters agree with her sentiment.
Then again, maybe I’m just old fashioned.
