JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Rabbis and public figures will join a demonstration outside Israel television’s Kan studios in Jerusalem Monday evening to protest a controversial satiric program which mocks biblical figures and derides them. The protesters claim that programs funded by taxpayers money including religious people should not offend their feelings with mockery of their hallowed personages.

Organizers described the program, called The Jews Are Coming, as making a mockery of great figures in the Bible, including Avraham Avinu,Moshe Rabbeinu and David Hamelech.
The Hidabroot site remarked that in any other place in the world this kind of program would have been considered antisemitism. Remarkably, the Education Ministry wished to include the program within the secular educational curriculum in Israel and only after outraged protests agreed to remove the program from the curriculum.
Hidabroot director Rabbi Zamir Cohen wrote that “It is permitted to laugh, but the question is what you are laughing at? Would any of the actors be willing for people to laugh at his mother like they laugh at Queen Esther? At Rachel Imenu? There is a law in Israel which prohibits harming religious feelings and they are harming millions of believers.”
Jerusalem Chief Rabbi Rabbi Shlomo Amar wrote a letter to ministers Rabbi Rafi Peretz and David Amsalem requesting that they intervene to remove the program from airing:
“I implore you to deal with this painful issue which hurts the soul of every thinking Jew in Israel and the diaspora who feels that he is an integral part of the Jewish nation (and indeed all of Jews are responsible for one another) and feels the deep pain of each Jew and especially the harm to the entire nation” Rabbi Amar wrote.
“Please, honored ministers, you have an opportunity to remove the desecration of G-d’s name and to prevent deep pain from every Jew who has spiritual sensitivity. May Hashem bless you and bring success in all of your endeavors,” Rabbi Amar concluded.
