HUIXTLA, Mexico (AP) — About 20 members of an extreme ultra-orthodox Jewish sect overpowered guards and escaped a government shelter in southern Mexico where they had been held since one of their leaders was arrested last Friday on organized crime and human trafficking allegations.

Mostly made up of children wearing long, flowing robes, members of the Lev Tahor sect pushed their way out of the complex Wednesday night, climbing over one guard from a private security company who had fallen to the ground. The federal government’s shelter for children and families in Huixtla usually receives migrants detained by immigration officials.

They climbed aboard a waiting truck outside and headed toward Mexico’s border with Guatemala. Local police, National Guard and Mexico’s immigration agency said they did not pursue them.

On Friday, authorities arrested Menachem Endel Alter of Jerusalem, a leader of the Lev Tahor sect on allegations of organized crime and human trafficking in Tapachula near the Guatemalan border. Members of the sect said a second leader was also arrested, but authorities did not confirm it.

Lev Tahor has had legal problems elsewhere.

Last November, two leaders of the group were convicted of kidnapping and child sexual exploitation crimes in New York. They allgedly kidnapped two children from their mother to return a 14-year-old girl to an illegal sexual relationship with an adult male.

The sect is known to have members in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Israel.

Why didn’t the leaders of the Monsey community excommunicate this cult and try to disband this group when they had a dozen members in Monsey? Because this cult was ignored and not investigated properly, despite the scary stories circulating about them 25 years ago, they are now a large cult with each couple, the girls being married at 12-14, having 10-15+ kids. And what now? So many innocent Yiddishe children are suffering and the cycle will continue. They are getting more and more dysfunctional as the days go by. The genie has grown too big and escaped the bottle…

very much a staged escape. The guards did nothing to stop them as they headed for a waiting bus.

BTW how come most of my comments are not printed?

many have left as a bunch of heads are in jail in us , vin didnt print the pic of the little boy and his fry father who initiated the raid
nebach they are sooooooooooo sickkkkkkkkk, yet such inner strength , if one thinks what these families have been thru , yet they dont get it… the sickest person is the one who is very ill yet thinks he is ok

I would be interested if someone would write a book explaining the psychology of people who want to live in a cult which abuses their own children and refuse to return to normal society. What makes people become so self destructive and destructive of their own families?

Nebach. This is so sad. What’s their deal? Are most of the members looking to be part of the mainstream but are stuck there?
